The National Institutes of Health, via a prime contract with AAC on CIO SP3 Large IDIQ, has awarded ESAC, Inc. a multiyear contract to support the Big Data to Knowledge initiative (BD2K).
BD2K is a trans-NIH initiative established to enable biomedical research as a digital research enterprise, to facilitate discovery and support new knowledge, and to maximize community engagement.
BD2K initiative will establish an NIH Biomedical Standards Coordinating Center (SCC) focused on widely used biomedical data and metadata standards. The goal is, through collaboration with the community and other standards efforts, to bring together information about the diverse and changing information standards relevant to biomedical research. The SCC will need to evolve to reflect the changing science and standards used to promote data sharing and reuse, and also will need to work closely with national and international standards bodies and resources to be complementary to other ongoing efforts. Over time, it is envisioned that these standards will themselves become digital assets within the Commons, and the SCC will help facilitate linkages between the data and the standards/metadata by making the standards more readily discoverable, used, and linked to relevant data.
